Water (수, 水) — flow, insight
Water is the element of depth and flow — going around what it cannot go through, and understanding more than it says. In Saju (Korean Four Pillars of Destiny, BaZi), it carries winter, the north, and everything that happens below the surface.
What it means
Water adapts and it perceives. Where water is emphasised, a person tends to read a room before entering it, and to find the route around an obstacle rather than the way through it. Nothing about that is passive — water is how you reach places force cannot.
Temperament
Water-leaning people are perceptive, often quietly so. They notice what was not said. They are flexible about form and firm about direction, which is easy to mistake for having no opinion. They usually have a very clear one; they are just waiting to see whether saying it will change anything.
Strengths
Reading situations and people accurately. Adapting without losing the thread. Depth of thought. Finding a way where there did not appear to be one.
The shadow side
Too much water disperses: everything is considered, nothing is committed to, and depth becomes a place to hide. Too little, and there is no give — you meet every obstacle head-on because going around it does not occur to you.
In relationships
Water understands people well and reveals itself slowly. It gives others room, sometimes more room than they wanted. The useful nudge: being understood is not automatic, and the person across from you is probably not reading you as accurately as you are reading them.
Finding balance
Water needs banks. Earth gives it a shape to run in, wood gives it a direction to run toward. The practical version: pick something, say it out loud, and let it be imperfect.
Reading this honestly
Everything above is a leaning, not a verdict. An element being strong in your chart does not make you one thing; it makes a certain move more likely to be your first one. Knowing the first move is what lets you choose a different one when it matters.
