Yang Wood (Jiǎ, 甲) Day Master

Jiǎ · 甲 · 갑목 · Wood · the tall tree

Yang Wood is the tall tree — the Day Master that grows straight up and means to keep going. In Saju (the Korean Four Pillars of Destiny, or BaZi), Jiǎ is the pioneer stem: upright, principled, and built to lead from the front.

What it is

Jiǎ is not a shrub; it is the trunk reaching for the canopy. As a Day Master it stands for someone with a clear direction and the spine to hold it — the person who sets a course and expects to be followed, and who would rather break than bend on a principle.

Temperament and strengths

Yang Wood people are straightforward, responsible, and reassuringly consistent — you always know where they stand. They start things, take the lead without being asked, and carry a sense of duty others quietly rely on.

The shadow side

The same uprightness can turn rigid: pride that will not concede a point, stubbornness that mistakes stiffness for strength. Too much Jiǎ is all trunk and no branches — growth in one direction, little flex for the rest.

In relationships

Yang Wood is loyal and protective, the partner who takes it seriously and means to grow it. The caution is bending — it defends its position so well it forgets to listen, and a tree that never sways can crack in a storm it could have ridden out.

Finding balance

Jiǎ steadies not by growing less but by learning to give — fire to express its warmth, metal to prune what is overgrown, water to soften the edge. In practice: let a branch bend before the whole trunk is tested.

How to use this

Your Day Master is one pillar of the chart, not the whole of you. The rest of the BaZi — the other three pillars and how strong or weak this element sits — shifts how a Yang Wood (Jiǎ, 甲) actually lives. Read it as a leaning, not a label, and keep what fits.
